Variables
are
named representations used to store values in computer
programming. The method of assigning
variables depends on the conventions of the programming
language. The values are associated with the named variable even when
the value changes. The variables are assigned name values in variable
arrays and hashes. A variable can usually be defined globally to work
throughout the program or locally to work
in one function.

Vendors
are
the manufacturers of a software application.
When an error occurs the user
is sometimes asked to consult the software
vendor even though it is hard to tell whether the operating
system or the application caused the
error. Veronica
stands for Very Easy Rodent Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized
Archives. This historic resource was linked with the Gopher
network information utility.
It was a constantly updated database of
the names of almost every item on thousands of Gopher servers.

VGA
stands for Video Graphics Array. It is a bit
mapped display monitor
with continuously variable colors. VGA
card
stands for Video Graphics Array card. It is a video
card for a VGA monitor
that has continuously variable colors.

Video
card
is a hardware interface
between the computer system motherboard
and the display monitor.
It can be integrated on to the mother board or be inserted into an expansion
slot. Video
display
is the output shown on the monitor's
screen. Viewing
in terms generally refers to accessing a drive,
directory or file
on a computer and examining the contents
in a file management or other program.
Virtual
devices on
the screen are simulations of computer
devices or peripheral devices that are
not actually connected to the computer
system. Virtual
hosting on
a network is using a single IP
address to point to several hostnames
allowing for the one address to support a multiple host
system. It is used for hosting numerous FQDNs
for multiple web sites on one server.
Virtual
machines
are server computers seen on a screen
simulation of a computer system that
is not really connected to the network.
Virtual
memory
is a method of extending RAM memory by
using a designated portion of a hard drive.
Virtual
Private Networks
(VPN) are connections between two networks
that communicates across the Internet
using encrypted data.
This type of network allows for more secure communications. The packets
of the data would have to be deciphered using decryption
to be read. Virus
is a term for a file or pieces of code
that can infect a computer system.
The worst viruses can delete files,
crash computers or wipe out data.
This can cause a user to lose files or
have to reinstall applications on the infected system. A virus can infect
a system by attaching to another software
application such as a trojan. A
virus is a security risk to a network
because it can self replicate distributing themselves automatically
to other networked systems. Viruses usually are unknowingly downloaded
from web sites or reside in email
attachments. The best way to get rid of viruses is to use an antivirus
software or virus protection software
that monitors the system. Alternatively, there are virus databases
on the Internet to identify and delete
suspected viruses off the system. Open source
software applications can give users more confidence that the product
does not contain any viruses because all the source code is openly viewable.
Virus
protection software
is a type of utility program
that scans a computer system for the
latest known viruses. They must be updated constantly to effectively
protect a system. Even with this protection a system is exposed to a
window of vulnerability.

VO |
VOIP
stands for Voice Over IP. This technology uses Internet
communications with a combination of various other telecommunications
technologies to allow users to make phone
calls over the Internet connections using the IP
protocol. VOIP usually handles the connections
through packet switching.
|
|
VP |
VPN
stands for Virtual Private Network. This refers
to a connection between two networks that
communicates across the Internet using
encrypted data.
This type of network allows for more secure communications. The packets
of the data would have to be deciphered using decryption
to be read.

VR |
VRML
stands for the Virtual Reality Modeling Language. This web
programming language is a platform
for developing three-dimensional graphics. A VRML world can show realistic
special on-line worlds that can contain
objects that link
to documents or other VRML worlds on the web. A VRML viewer or web
browser plug-in is necessary to
view a VRML enhanced site.

Vulnerabilities
are software problems in applications
such as operating systems or web
browsers that can allow hackers or
crackers to access the computer
system. These problems can be serious security
risks because they could allow the intruder to cause harm to the
system. Software companies will sometimes release patches
to fix known vulnerabilities, bugs and
exploits, but there can be a window
of vulnerability during which the products are susceptible.
