GIF is an acronym for Graphics Image Format. GIF is a popular image format for files published on the web. Images on the web are predominately using either the GIF or JPEG format. PNG is a third format used on the web that is similar to GIF. The GIF format is recommended for noncontinuous tone images with large sections of colors. GIF images also provide alpha channel support for transparency and can be interlaced to fade in. The format can also easily be imported into GIF animations. GIFs allows for different color palettes of different sizes. A 1 bit with 2 color palette, 2 bit with 16 colors, up to 16 bit with 64k colors. This is advantageous when there are a small number of colors used in an image because the size of the file can be significantly reduced.

Giga refers to one billion when used as a combining form in words. It is a term used to define units of measurement in computer memory. So in the case of the word gigabyte means one billion bytes, but because computer measurements are in binary code a gigabyte is only approximately equal to one billion bytes.

Gigabytes are units of measurement in computer memory. A gigabyte is just over just over one billion bytes. Here the giga is a prefix meaning one billion. A gigabyte is only approximately equal to one billion bytes because computer measurements are binary code. A gigabyte is exactly 1024 megabytes.
