Numbers - Systems of Numeration - Contents

A system of numeration is the system of numbers used for a math equation. There have been different systems of numeration throughout history. The agreed upon decimal system based on the fact that humans have ten fingers predominates in most of the world. In English, the western numeration system uses the character number symbols zero through nine. These symbols can be traced to Hindu-Arabic digits from around 200 BCE. Binary numeration system only uses two symbols, typically zero and one. Octal numeration system uses eight symbols. The numeration system retains the mathematical functions and characteristics of the number. For example, prime numbers are still prime in any numeration system. Computer systems use the binary system as the basic elemental system of numeration for data. At the computer's lowest physical level a switch set to off or on can symbolize the two binary numbers, zero or one.
