Basic Math - Associative Laws - Contents

The associative laws establish rules for addition and multiplication when using parentheses in mathematical equations. These laws are related to the associative laws of sets. They apply to the set of all real numbers.

Basic Math - Associative Laws - Definitions

This basic law is for any real number a, b and c:

Associative Laws

a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
a plus the quantity b plus c equals the quantity a plus b, plus c.

a x (b x c) = (a x b) x c
a times the quantity b times c equals the quantity a times b, times c.
