Symmetry & Transitive Laws

The symmetry and transitive laws establish simple rules for equalities in mathematical equations. These laws apply to the set of all real numbers.

These two basic laws are for any real number a, b and c:

Symmetry Law

If a = b, then b = a
If a equals b, then b equals a.

Transitive Law

If a = b and b = c, then a = c
If a equals b and b equals c, then a equals c.
